My journey with Kathak

I was 9 years old when I started learning Kathak. It started as an extra curricular activity, but over the years I have come to love it.

Dance is one of the ways of expressing your emotions. I have used dance to express myself.

Dance is also used  to tell stories .Apart from footwork and facial expressions, one integral part of it is storytelling is the system of single or double-handed gestures called mudras.

My journey with kathak began when I was nine years old. My mother enrolled me in a kathak class. I was reluctant to join the class at first, because I have always been a shy child, but kathak helped me overcome my social anxiety at a very young age. After a few classes, I gained confidence.

I used to switch on the stereo and would dance to the rhythmic beat of the tabla. I remember spending hours, perfecting  one hand movement.

Soon after starting, I gave my first kathak exam. I remember my parents and my sister standing outside the hall, waiting for me. I was told by the examiner that once I start dancing, I didn't care about anyone or anything around me, and that is how I feel when I dance, today as well. I focus on my movements and the rhythmic beat of the drum.
